The Silver Maple Bride

I was tasked by the Wisconsin Historical Society with recreating a piece from their historic archives through my own unique interpretation. I chose to work with a traditional Norwegian bridal crown and cape. These crowns take many forms and vary from region to region, but are known for their intricate details and maximalist style.

I put my own spin on this old world aesthetic by incorporating a maple seed and leaf motif. I have always found these seeds beautiful, but within this piece they take on a deeper meaning, symbolizing life, growth, and endurance.

This project was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the material traditions of my ancestors while studying the beautiful garments and rituals that have stood the test of time. Through The Silver Maple Bride, I was able to honor those traditions while reimagining them through my own perspective and creative practice.
